By Luke Sillett. South West London, Saturday 16th February The general idea is that three groups of four guys prepare and host a simple three course supper for three groups of four girls. The girls rotate around the different houses getting a chance to sample both the food, and the boys on each visit.

You’ve organised a dinner party for 18 people. Of the 18, you might only know one or two. Six guests are turning up in half an hour and the others won’t arrive until nearer 10pm. No one will stay for more than one course but it’s nothing to do with the quality of the food. This is safari dating. It sounds confusing but it’s the new way for single Londoners to meet potential partners over supper.

Joe Baker, 28, from Islington, has been reaping the benefits of the new dating format. He and his friends were fed up with lugging food around to help out when their friends had dinner parties. The idea requires a fair bit of organisation and works best with a minimum of nine men and nine women, who split up into sets of three.

Each set of men, who host the parties in their homes, cook up identical three-course dinners. Three female guests arrive for dinner at each of the three houses and rotate after each course. At the end of the meal, everyone meets up for drinks where the scrum for the most attractive man or woman really begins. To make it work, you have to run a tight ship, moving on swiftly after an hour for each course.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced when zoos and safari parks can reopen in England at the latest lockdown review on 23 June.

Zoos and safari parks in England will be allowed to reopen from 15 June, Boris Johnson is to announce on Wednesday, amid fears that some would be bankrupted if the shutdown extended into the summer months. With the government keen to relieve the tedium of the lockdown for cooped-up families without sparking a fresh increase in coronavirus cases, the prime minister will also say drive-in cinemas can open for business next week.

Zoos had been told as recently as last week that they should expect to remain closed indefinitely. They will not be allowed to open indoor exhibits, such as reptile houses, and catering outlets will have to remain takeaway only, to comply with distancing guidelines. MPs had been due to debate the future of zoos on Thursday. With National Trust gardens and other outdoor attractions already open, some had questioned why zoos had not been allowed to follow suit.

Scientific advice suggests transmission of the virus is much less likely outdoors, and gatherings of up to six people from different households are now allowed in the open air, provided they maintain a two-metre distance.
